Gillies Bar & Grill, Galgorm Resort & Spa, Ballymena

If you're an N.I local I'm sure you're well aware of the grandeur of Galgorm Resort & Spa, Ballymena, it's one of the places to head in Northern Ireland on those special occasions for a relaxing break or a spa day with the girls.

Nestled within the lavish surroundings of Galgorm Resort & Spa, you'll find Gillies Bar & Grill.  A hidden gem full of character, charm and indulgent treats.

I was kindly invited along to Gillies this week to sample some of their wares and I just had to share it with you all.

Gillies is located to the rear of the main Galgorm resort and outside you'll find lots of little drinking nooks, an outdoor pool table and BBQ area and lots of TVs dotted around to keep you up to date with all the sports when they are on.  I can imagine the bar area being packed full of happy Guinness drinkers and sports fans in the evenings and an ideal location for a mid-afternoon tipple with your gal-pals on the weekends...(note to self, must do).

Inside, Gillies is a relaxed Grill room, with a huge inviting fireplace complete with stag heads and tartan furnishings.  Think cosy but on a grand scale.  We were seated in what seemed to be the most recent addition to the room, a bright conservatory style seated area that looked out onto the in-house stable space.

The menu is packed full of tempting treats, so much so that we actually couldn't decide on one thing for our starter and opted for the sharing platter for two.

With four more-than-generous portions of BBQ Ribs, Salt-n-Chilli Chicken, Mushroom Gratin and Caesar Salad, there was something to please everyone on the platter.

The star of the starter had the be the Salt-n-Chilli Chicken.  Tender, delicately spiced chicken, presented ontop of an Asian style salad.  The flavours were just stunning, Mr Flicks and myself fought for the last piece and sadly I lost.

Luckily I was able to console myself with the other accompaniments.   If you're a fan of cheese, I would highly recommend checking out the Mushroom Gratin - grab yourself some fresh crusty bread and you're onto a winner.

I'm one of those people who pretend to be healthy when going out for dinner.  I try to convince myself that if I have a fish dish for mains then I can save space for dessert.  I really don't know my theory behind that to be honest, but humour me here, will you?!

Mr Flicks has his own preferences too - if there's a steak on the menu, he'll have it.

So with that in mind we of course went for the fish dish and steak for mains.

My grilled seabass fillet, served with wok fried noodles, pak-choi and mushrooms was a joy to look at never mind taste.  The colours, quality and presentation was outstanding.  On first bite I was in love.  Delicious, fresh and light.  The dish was exactly what I was hoping for.

Mr F's steak was cooked to perfection and served without any fuss, just what he likes.  Top marks from him.

Dessert.  Oh my, dessert!  If you manage to save space I'd highly recommend you take a glance at the dessert menu.

Mr Flicks was chuffed to see his favourite, warm chocolate brownie on the menu and I went for the chocolate and coffee gateau opera that was served with Amerena cherries and cream.  A rich, dreamy delight that was perfectly balanced.

If you're in the area I'd highly recommend popping into Gillies, they have a wide range of menus to suit all tastes and I'll leave the links for those below too.

If you fancy treating yo'self and your dear mumma this fine Sunday, Gillies actually have an amazing deal for Mother's Day;

For only £27.95 for 3 courses you can celebrate Mother's Day in style at Gillies .  I'd advise you to book quickly though, I'm sure it'll be a busy one at that price.

This post was in collaboration with Galgorm resort and Spa but of course, all opinions and are my own.
