Microneedling & Me | Thérapie Clinic

Thérapie Clinic Belfast Ann Street
Have you ever considered having microneedling?

Well I did it and I wanted to share my experience as I had a lot of interest when I talked over on my Instastories about my appointments over the last few months.

**warning, this post contains close up images of my face(soz) post-treatment**

Since I was 13 I suffered with acne, I'm now 34 years old and still not happy with my skin.  We're all our own worst critics when it comes to how we look but I've never been comfortable with my make-up free face and have worn a make-up mask for as long as I can remember.

When Thérapie Clinic asked if I like to come in for a consultation before Christmas last year I was really interested to see what treatments they thought would help my scarring, large pores and early signs of ageing.

My initial consultation in Thérapie Clinic, who are now based on Anne Street, Belfast took about 20/30 minutes and we talked over all my skincare concerns, what products I currently use (that was a looong list, you all know I'm a skincare product hoarder, yes?) and what treatments were open to me.

We decided that Dermapen, a form of microneedling would be the treatment we'd try out on my skin and see how I responded to it and all being well, I'd have five sessions in total.

Have you heard of Thérapie Clinic?

I bet you have, but if not; Thérapie Clinic are the number 1 laser hair removal & skin clinic in the UK and they offer a huge range of non-surgical, confidence boosting treatments for the skin and body including laser hair removal, acne treatments, cosmetic injections and anti-cellulite treatments.

They stock some well known brands such as Image Skincare, Murad, Yon-ka and their own branded Thérapie Clinic range too and their handy City Centre based clinics are beautifully styled, clean and modern with well equipped and discreet treatment rooms.

At my consultation meeting I was gifted a product to use in advance of my treatments to prepare my skin for my forthcoming sessions; the Stem Cell Cleanser by Image Skincare is part of their "The Max" range of products and this gentle, foaming facial cleanser is designed to balance the pH levels in the skin.  It contains no sulfates, fillers, acids or parabens.  It's suitable for normal, mature, dry and sensitive skin types and the plant extracts within the product work with plant stem cells to nourish the skin with vitamins and minerals while protecting the skin from environmental damage.

I was to use this every morning and evening, a week in advance of my treatments to make sure my skin's pH levels were balanced before the Dermapen sessions and I loved this products so much that I've repurchased it three times since first use.

My first appointment was a rainy Monday morning in January, and I had one session each month following that.  I wanted to give the treatment it's full five sessions before writing about my experience here on the blog to see how my skin reacted to it.

I was greeted by my therapist, Niamh who went through the formalities, we signed the forms etc and proceeded to the treatment room to get started.

During my treatments the Belfast clinic actually relocated from Royal Avenue to a brand spanking new, Ann Street Belfast location and the treatment rooms in the new branch are beautifully designed with sleek white walls, copper sanitary wear and grey and blush pink furnishings.  In the colder months there was a huge, cosy woollen blanket on the beds to relax under too.

What is Microneedling/ Dermapen?

Microneedling is a type of Collagen induction therapy.  Tiny, sterile needles puncture the skin repeatedly so that it tricks the skin to produce collagen and elastin to promote ‘healing’ and the effect will be a rejuvenated skin perfect for treating fine lines and wrinkles, improving scaring and prevent signs of ageing.

The Dermapen is a form of microneedling - some clinics use a derma roller like this (link) but Thérapie Clinic favour the Dermapen.  The Dermapen can get into areas such as the around the nose etc that you may not get the same access to if using a roller.

The Dermapen has in in-built motor that makes the 12 needles on the very tip move rapidly back and forth on the skin surface creating the tiny punctures.

Niamh, my therapist deeply cleansed my face using Image Skincare products before applying a numbing cream all over the areas that would be treated.  The numbing cream takes around 15 minutes to take effect.

Although the photo below shows my face looking rather red, I want to categorically state that the treatment was comfortable throughout.  I'd say it felt more like an electric toothbrush being moved around the face, I could feel the Dermapen on my skin but the needles are so tiny, they didn't cause any discomfort.

The treatment lasts around 30 minutes and then after each treatment, a clinical grade sheet mask is applied to the skin for 10 minutes to soothe and hydrate the complexion before heading on your way.

After the soothing facemask is removed, my therapist applied SPF before heading home.

Downtimes wise, you wouldn't want to book a big date night right after having a Microneedling session.

I'm not going to lie, my face stayed pretty red for the first 12 hours post treatment, but I still went into my office after my appointments, looking like I'd be sitting in the sun for a bit too long but this had faded by the next morning.

I'd say the redness post-treatment really started to calm down the more treatments I had, as if my skin got used to the treatment and didn't show the redness quite so much on the last two appointments.

It's normal for the skin to feel quite tight for the first 24 hours and then it may get pretty dry throughout the next 5/7 days.

It's advisable to not use anything on the skin for the first 24 hours other than tepid water and SPF and then after in the days after, if I felt the need to wear make up, I was advised to use a mineral based make up during the day and a hydrating serum in the evenings.

The results

I've always suffered from a very uneven skintone, red scarring from blemishes and large open pores on my nose and cheeks and throughout my treatments I enjoyed the how my skintone really seemed to even out after the treatments.

Below is the difference in my skin before and 1 week post treatment.

I would say that the Dermapen really helped my complexion to feel so much smoother and plump.

My skin felt amazing at the end of my 5 sessions but I think to take any action on my acne scarring I would need some additional sessions.

Dermapen was never going to solve my issue with the large pores, sadly this is something that runs in my family and there is no magic wand to reduce those but with the skin feeling more plump and the smoother skintone, the pores don't seem quite as prominent when I look in the mirror and for me, that's personally a huge confidence booster.

Although the Dermapen treatment is pretty pricey at £120 per session, Thérapic Clinic do offer special prices if you were to book 5 sessions etc and I'd definitely consider having further sessions to keep working on my scarring to help improve self confidence with my skin.

I documented every appointment on my Instagram Stories and they are still pinned to the top of my Instagram profile so do feel free to go have a look over there too, where you'll be able to see a few more photos, before/afters etc.

If by chance you've ever considered Microneedling and maybe have some questions, please fire them at me.

  1. I've always struggled with my acne scarring as well so I'm curious about all these kinds of treatments for scarring because I really want to fade mine. Thank you for writing this up so I could learn more about microneedling!
